Three lunches in Tenby

Tenby is just 10 miles from our holiday lodge in Pembrokeshire and though it's not the closest town it's the one where we spend a lot of our time (and money!)

Here are our three favourite lunch haunts:

The Blue Ball (tel 01834 843038) on the cobbled Upper Frog Street is a tad pricey for us to visit more than a couple of times each holiday, but we make sure to go at least once.  My partner is vegetarian and there isn't always stacks of choice for him on the menu, but the staff are friendly and the kitchen flexible so they're great at sorting something superb.  Fish here is fantastic and the meat is locally sourced (ask about providence and just try and catch the staff out - they know everything!).  Ask for suggestions on pairing with wine and the staff don't take liberties - we enjoyed a pretty decent bottle for under 20 quid.  Unfortunately The Blue Ball isn't a well-kept secret, so it's best to book ahead, especially for evenings and Sunday lunch.

Bar 10 (tel 01834 845164) on St. Georges Street is a very different vibe. I'm sure in the evenings it's very chic but we're parents of a toddler so our visits are limited to lunchtimes.  Honestly, we didn't think it would suit us since we had The Boy with us, but the menu was actually really good for all of us and the atmosphere surprisingly family-friendly.  We've only eaten from the bar menu and sampled Sunday lunch.  Both have been freshly prepared and very good value for money.  As this is a bar the selection of bevvies is very extensive.  We've never booked but I can imagine in season it gets pretty crowded.

The Hope and Anchor pub (tel 01834 842131) on St Julian Street is our favourite when we have the dogs with us, as there is a small outside seating area.  I know there are lots of pubs where you can take dogs inside but ours are not well-behaved enough and I feel less self-conscious outside.  There are some local specials (highly recommended is the Tenby mackerel when it's on the menu) alongside standard pub fare.  With a pint of cider and the sun on your back there really isn't anywhere better to be and the pub has an enviable location near the harbour.  Be prepared to wait for outside tables.

Just for the record, we've never told any of the places we visit that we might review them, we've always paid full price and all information is given in good faith, etc.
